  1. Hello,

Update ** I have all the information details on his death and we have visited his grave in Hanover just last week ** I have also applied to the MOD**

I am currently researching the journey of my late Grandfather during WW2. I have recently received his Tracer and Casualty Cards and looking to fully decipher them and then research the places he served during that time, with the hope to create a War Time story of sorts for my Dad and hopefully find some photos of him.

So far I have the following if anyone is able to correct any errors add and additions or can signpoint me in the direction for each posting, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know at the time of death he was with the C Sqn 3 RTR - can I presume all his time was with the C Sqn when with 3rd RTR?

For his other units do they also then have individual Sqn/branches? (sorry if incorrect terminology)

    Tracer Card

    1. 24/07/1940 to 01/11/1941 - 9th Lancashire Fusiliers

    2. 01/11/1941 to 15/12/43 - 143rd Regiment

    30/12/41-12/01/42 HOSPITAL

    3. 15/12/1943 to 14/07/1944 - 1st RG Hussars (Royal Gloucestershire Hussars)

    01/02/44-21/02/44 HOSPITAL

    4. 14/07/1944 to 18/07/1944 - 2nd Amred Rienf Armoured Reinforcements Unit

    5. 18/07/1944 - 24/07/1944 - 2 ARV XIV/21AG (2nd Armoured Recovery Vehicle) (XIV is a code given to personnel that are assigned as unposted reinforcements) (21st Army Group)

    6. 24/07/1944 - 23/01/1945 - 3rd RTR

    7. 23/01/1945 - 29/01/1945 - XII/21AG (XII is a code given to personnel that are evacuated on medical grounds behind regimental aid) - NOT SURE WHAT 21AG MEANS?

    NOT ON CASUALTY CARD? ^^

    8. 29-01-1944 - 16-04-1945 - 3 RTR

3 RTR C Sqn - KIA - WE HAVE FULL DETAILS FOR THIS :) Thanks to help from here already

Welcome aboard. There is plenty of knowledge and expertise here. An easy question what is 21AG? 21 Army Group (the British formation for the NW Europe campaign).

It might be worth checking if there is a local newspaper article about him. Most public libraries have access to the British Newspaper Archive when in the library, not online.

On your current information he has not appeared here before today.

It helps to add a ‘tag’ when you create a thread, only you can do this. It is for the formation / corps involved or a theme like intelligence. Searching tags can identify threads, otherwise it takes a bit longer.

If you search online with "3 Royal Tank Regiment" site:ww2talk.com that will show something. You change the text within "..." to 3rd or RTR to check if other threads exist and so on for the other units you have id'd..

The CWGC shows two others from his regiment died that day (8/4/1945), may be even from one vehicle (tank likely): https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2198636/harold-charles-ellershaw/

He could have been wounded and died in the following days. The 1st grave list shows five KSLI died the same day. That may be a coincidence as there are posts in a thread about an incident on 4/4/1945 where soldiers from both units died: 3rd Royal Tank Regiment War Diary

Some research tips, now a four pg. PDF available on: WW2 Soldier Research - Tips and Links for New Researchers (update) Plus: How to Start a new Thread / Edit Post / Upload Image
