the USAAC was much too optimistic about the accuracy of the norden bombsight and the defensive gunfire grid of the impervious " box formation " . the less than hoped for us bombing offensive went forward mostly because it was the only possible way to bring the war to festung europa , losses were high but compared to the debacle of mainland landings in 42 or 43 ,as demanded by the soviets , the anglo american air offensive was cheap indeed .

It also diverted a lot of resources away from the fighting fronts, in terms of raw materials, men & machines and research. Most importantly, however, it caused the widespread withdrawal of Luftwaffe fighter aircraft from the Eastern Front to counter the ombers, which gave the Soviets an easier ride, and also eventually caused the effective removal of the Luftwaffe as an effective fighting force.

P-38s Turbos froze at 30.000 feet, making it not too good at bomber escort. 109's wait above & drop on em. German pilots considered it easy meat. Buhligen & Galland & Rall. It was not til late 44 when it got hydraulics in the J & L models that it was a dangerous fighter.

As to Turkey & Aegean stuff, interesting.
