Leave it to the Russians!

I came across this photo and got such a kick out of it. I would say it must have never been put into production, but what a cool idea!

Good old Object 279. Mooted as an all-terrain heavy tank in the early part of the Cold War but not pursued with any real enthusiasm.

I can't see that being easy to maintain in the field! Imagine trying to change tracks or repair running gear. Getting all the tracks to coordinate for turning would have been tricky as well. The prototype turned out to be unwieldy and inefficient over rough terrain.

All in all, it's probably best to just have wide tracks and be done.

I would think clearing the tracks of mud and snow before it would freeze would be almost impossible! I think it's a cool project but like we have to remind so many designers, "just because you can build something doesn't mean you should "!
