Vehicle Quiz

Postby Ricky » Thu Apr 03, 2008 5:07 pm

Ok, a tough one.

This is part of a picture from a book I own showing a column of British troops driving past a captured German airbase in the desert.

But - what are the first and last vehicles in this column?

I don't know about the first one, but the last kind of looks like a Chevrolet 30cwt.

I think the last and the first is the same vehicle.

What's curious is that the vehicle in the far background looks kind of like a steamroller.

You're right, but not totally unexpected at an airbase, especially if the runways consisted onlt of hard packed earth.

they seem to have a very flat, squared front, which is unlike any Chevvy used (as far as I know), and the other details seem to rule out Italian vehicles.

Good news though - I went to Duxford at the weekend and bought myself a book on transport vehicles of WW2. Hopefully I should be able to ID them.

Hmmm...

the only vehicle I can find that had such a rectangular front were the Bedford trucks, but they all had much shorter bonnets than those in the picture, and the bonnets also had a marked slope, whereas in the picture they are horizontal.

As far as the body goes, the best fit seems to be German staff cars!

Maybe they're some sort of civilian vehicle pressed into service?

trouble is I can't find any vehicle from the time that looks like that. If it wasn't for the time frame I'd swear that they were Land Rovers... :?
