Postby Ossian » Sat Feb 02, 2008 11:32 am

To restart this one:

Very difficult / convoluted questions, puzzles or riddles, not necessarily on a military theme:
Person who gets the answer gets to ask the next question

How could Britain's highest military honour be given to a geographic area via another geographic area?
Explain

The highest UK military honour AFAIK is the victoria cross which I believe was aware to the population of Malta during WW2

That was the George Cross -- the non-military equivalent of the VC (which has to be awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy")

No, it is the VC I am asking about.

I don't know if it will help, but there is also a Greek connection

Is this anything to do with commemorative postage stamps?

Actually there is a stamp connection, and that will probably help a lot. I didn't know it when I posted the question, so I learn something as well.

Not that I'm aware of. The connections (apart from the Greek one) are all British

Thankfully NOT! No shooting of tweeters involved, and I don't think he picked up a VC among his collection of gongs.
Right service, though.

Surely he was well before the VC!
Anyway, what are the two Geographical connections (not to mention the Greek one)?

Was an entire ship ever awarded the VC?

I was refering to Capt.Sebastian Cook of the Royal Mail Picket Boat who invented the first tuna flavoured postage stamp in 1987.

To answer Ricky, I believe that a crew member would be chosen by ballot to receive the honour. I know one of the WW1 Q-ships got this -- one VC for the Officers and one for the crew. Can't find the book right now, but it's called "Our Mystery Ships" by Gordon Campbell VC, RN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Campbell_(VC) with the usual Wiki Alert)

Merlin, I'll have a pint of whatever you've been having!

Need another hint?
